Peru 2022

Peru

Peru one of the most beautiful countries I know – I started my trip in the capital Lima. Not a very pretty city, just a big one. Every traveler will visit it but mostly you won’t like it. It is also said that Lima is a very dangerous city, dirty and with horrible traffic but it also has some beautiful and pleasant places.

If you visit the historic center, you can see that the city administration is restoring the wonderful colonial architecture to make it more attractive to the international public. But the center and the pedestrian zone are only a few blocks. Most tourists stay in the neighborhoods of Miraflores or San Isidro where the wealthy community lives.

Or – for me the best option – they go to Barranco. The quarter of art and night culture. The atmosphere of Barranco is a lot more relaxed than in other places. There are many markets for handcraft stuff and food. The architecture is wonderful, you can go to the beach by a staircase or you stay upstairs and enjoy the sunset in a place with a view of the sea. And at night you can go to some of the best bars in Lima or visit one of the clubs and dance all night.

In Lima I rented a car and drove to Paracas, a town on the coast 260 kilometers south of Lima. Paracas  is famous for its biosphere reserve and for excursions to the Ballestas Islands. Unfortunately it was not possible to visit these islands because the sea was very rough, so we could only do a tour to the White Islands – but it was a blast too.

In the afternoon I was exploring the Paracas National Reserve with its dunes, cliffs and beaches. In the town of Paracas you can rent quads, bicycles or motorcycles, which I think are the best option to discover the reserve from all sides, because the guided excursions will only show you a really small part of the reserve.

From Paracas I continued my trip to the oasis of Huacachina near the city of Ica. For me one of the most beautiful places in Peru. I stayed there for almost a week and for me Huacachina is the perfect place to relax and enjoy life. Of course, it is very touristy and everything is more expensive than in other towns, but the dunes of the Ica desert are fantastic. I have gone up to one of the highest ones every afternoon to stay there and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen in my life.

I also did one of the inescapable buggy tours and it was amazing even though all the drivers are maniacs. If you stay around Ica for a little longer you can take an excursion to a pisco winery where they explain you how the pisco and the wines of the Ica Valley are produced. For people from Europe or wine lovers it will be a bit unusual that most of the wines they let you taste are very sweet. I tried the first wine from the Ica Valley which was dry and tasty in Cusco a week later.

From Huacachina I went to Nazca for a few days to fly over the famous Nazca lines. The flight with one of the tiny planes is probably the worst flight in the world but the one with the best experience I’ve ever had in my life. I won’t recommend it for people with a light stomach because the pilot is constantly turning the plane – 90 degrees to the right, 90 degrees to the left – for 30 minutes. Apart from the nausea, you have an impressive perspective for viewing the lines.

If you stay in Nazca over night I would recommend a visit to the Maria Reiche observatory at the DM Hotel in the town center. It is not a classic observatory but there is an old man who is making the guide with a lot of love. He shows you a little movie about the lines and theories why the tribe of Nazca built them and if the sky is clear of clouds you have a perfect view of the sky – in the city center!

Back on my way to Huacachina I stopped at Maria Reiche’s house for a while, which is a small museum.

I stayed in Huacachina for a few more days and then returned to Lima to catch a flight to Cusco, the Andean pearl. The city with its small alleys is located 3400 meters above the sea level and is mixture of colonial architecture and the ruins of the Inca culture. The people, the markets, crafts and Andean food is definitely making Cusco to one of the most beautiful cities in Peru. Unfortunately tourism is very commercialized and on every corner someone wants to sell you something.

My recommendation is always to leave the big squares like the Plaza de Armas and say goodbye to the urban jungle in the alleys. In smaller streets you’ll find more authentic areas and the sellers are not as pushy. Also you always have to haggle – you should never pay the price they tell you first.

In Cusco you could stay for a month or longer. It is the door to Machu Picchu, but there is much more to see around as for example, the ruins of Sacsayhuamán and Q’enco, the San Pedro Market, the Coricancha Temple or a tour to the mountain of seven colors and so much more activities that can be done.

Departing from Cusco I travelled to Machu Picchu, leaving my luggage at my hostel in Cusco and hopping on a train to Aguascalientes. I’ve chosen the bimodal service of Inca Rail which takes you by bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo where you board your train. That option costs you about 120 dollars at least. There is also the option of taking a minibus that takes you to the hydroelectric plant in at least six hours and from there you need to walk two and a half hours to Aguascalientes following the train tracks.

Aguascalientes is probably the most expensive village of Peru. It is the place every visitor to Machu Picchu has to go through at least once. The town is named for its hot thermal springs where you can refresh yourself after visiting Machu Picchu. To discover the ruins there are also several options. You can drive to the entrance with a bus or you can hike the stairs for about an hour. Uphill I went on the bus and after I walked downhill. The best times for a visit are very early in the morning or after two in the afternoon.

You have to have the ticket before you get to the entrance because you can’t buy tickets there. When you entered the site you can choose between four different tours. For the Wayna Picchu mountain you need a separate ticket. Once inside you can enjoy the phenomenal architecture of the Incas and wonder how they have built this incredible city on that mountain.

After visiting Machu Picchu I returned to Cusco to rest a bit. The next day I went on a tour to the Vinicunca mountain, the mountain of seven colors. Leaving Cusco at half past three in the morning with a small bus to the Vinicunca Valley and having a short stay for breakfast, we parked the bus at almost 4,600 meters above sea level. Beginning there it was an hour and a half hike to the top at 5,036 meters where the view into the valley is wonderful. If you’re lazy and don’t want to walk you can rent a horse but the altitude is noticeable on the horse as well and you’ll have to hike the last meters as well.

Back in Cusco I directly continued my trip to Lake Titicaca using a night bus. I arrived very early and embarked directly on one of the boats to visit the islands. It was a two-day tour including one night on the island of Amantaní. At first, we visited the floating islands of the Uros which are built out of cut totora, a thick, buoyant sedge that grows abundantly in the shallows of Lake Titicaca.

I would say it is interesting to visit the Uros but it is a bit like Disneyland. If you book a tour, check out that you visit Amantaní as well. It’s also touristic but not that much like on the Uros. There we stayed with a family in their house and they guided us around the island explaining their culture. During the night there is no light pollution and you have got a wonderful view of the firmament. The next day we went to another island called Taquile and returned to Puno in the afternoon.

By using the night bus again to get to Arequipa, where my trip ends after a month, I left Puno on the same evening. In Arequipa I visited Andean Sanctuary Museum where the famous mummy of Juanita can be found. Juanita is in fact not a mummy but afrozen 12 year old Inca girl who was sacrificed to the gods in the 1450s. I had an excellent time in the restaurants of the second most populated city in Peru. On my last full day I visited the monastery of Santa Catalina which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historical Centre of the City of Arequipa”. After more than four weeks I had to say goodbye to a wonderful country.

I will definitely return to this magic place with it’s wonderful people, culture and style of living. My time travelling through Peru was way to short and there is so much more to discover. See you soon!!!

Stockholm 2021

Stockholm

Stockholm offers a wealth of art and culture: interactive museums, magnificent castles, small galleries and personal artists’ homes. The district of Gamla Stan is the historical center of the city of Stockholm. The beautiful old town surrounded by the water is by far the most important sight of the city with its winding, medieval streets, pastel-colored houses, the royal castle and the magnificent churches and palaces.

I’ve been visiting Stockholm during winter and discovered the different christmas markets around the old town. Brilliant winter sun melts snow on the rooftops and the whole city shines bright in the light.

I went to the Fotografiska, the temple for modern photography in the former customs house near the ferry terminal. Four large exhibitions are shown every year behind the brick facade, and the Bread & Wine Bistro offers great food and a wide view over the old town of Gamla Stan and the islands of Djurgården and Skeppsholmen.

On the Skeppsholmen island you can find four museums, have a nice walk or just enjoy a drink and a small snack in one of the islands cafés.

The Vasa Museum (Vasamuseet), which is located on the island of Djurgården, houses the Vasa, the world’s only surviving ship from the 17th century. The Vasa Museum is one of Stockholm’s top tourist attractions and is the most visited museum in Scandinavia. It’s phenomenal how the wreckage is preserved, and a visit is definitely a must do when you’re travelling to Stockholm.

Next to the Vasa Museum on Djurgården there are also located the ABBA museum and the Skansen museum, the oldest open-air museum in the world. The small museum village consists of many small, authentic wooden houses as you often see in Sweden and Scandinavia.

The many houses show how craftsmen, bakers, glassblowers and other vocations were practiced around 100 years ago. On th main square with the church of the museum village there is a beautiful christmas tree in winter and many stalls invite you to taste delicious Swedish delicacies with music and dancing.

I started my trip to Stockholm during the Nobel Week and I could experience the Nobel Week Lights an annual light festival in Stockholm that takes place during the Nobel Week. International and local artists and designers create large-scale public light art that presents these impactful discoveries at a monumental scale while welcoming the audience to reimagine the city of Stockholm and the urban environment. It is an impressive installation that shows again the character of Stockholm as a city of art and culture.

After a day above the city or the beautiful traditional museum village, you can end the day in the beautiful trendy district of Södermalm. The area, also called Söder, used to be a simple working-class area and is now a central point of the city, where many artists live and work.

The beautiful old houses are well preserved and are surrounded by many parks that are beautifully covered with snow in winter. In SoFo, a colorful part of Södermalm, you can turn night into day in restaurants and bars with warm Swedish dishes and high quality drinks.

Paris 2021

Paris

Paris ‘the city of love’ a mesmerizing city you’ll definitely fall in love with. Whitestone townhouses ooze luxury, the smell of freshly baked croissants drifts through the air, and flowers hang at the sides of cobbled streets.

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most iconic monuments globally, up there with the likes of the Statue of Liberty, the Taj Mahal, or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is an icon of Paris, towering above the city by day and lighting it up at night. If you want to enjoy the view over the iconic skyline of Paris you’d have to visit Montmarte.

Montmarte is the prettiest area in all of Paris. What was once a tiny village on the hill, separated from the city, now forms the 18th district of Paris. You will find there a lot of phenomenal bars and restaurants. The Basilica Sacre-Coeur is the icon of Montmartre, a stunning white church that sits on the very top of the hill looking over Paris. You can access the central dome by climbing 300 steps to the top, where you’ll find even greater panoramic views of Paris.

Spend the rest of your day in the trendy neighborhood of Le Marais. You can find everything you could possibly need in this beautiful little medieval neighborhood, whether it’s trendy vintage shops and restaurants, luxurious squares, or ancient, narrow medieval streets that could be straight from a novel. Enjoy a walk around the Marché des Enfants Rouges and stay at one of the restaurants for a small meal.

If you walk along the Seine there’s a lot of vendors besides the street like on the picture below on the Quai Saint-Michel. Visiting the Pont Neuf, the Notre Dame cathedral and the various parisien parks and gardens just brightens your day. It’s the french lifestyle that makes you feel happy.

Surrounded by nice people, good food and wine you will have a perfect time. I’ve been visiting Paris in the autumn and it’s a perfect time. During these months, enjoy mild weather, days of sunshine, and slightly quieter streets. And there’s still a lot more to see – to much for just a few days of travel.

The Louvre Museum is one of the most famous in the entire world. It’s known for housing the Mona Lisa and its unique triangular shape. Featuring the French monarch’s art collection and the result of the pillaging which was carried out during Napoleon’s Empire, the Louvre Museum opened in 1793.

The Sorbonne University and cafés popular with students are located in the picturesque Latin Quarter, the 5th arrondissement of Paris. The district is also known for its bookshops whose are also worth a visit.

Enjoy the french way of life whilst you’re travelling to Paris. I can highly recommend a short trip to this marvellous city in the heart of Europe.

Ireland 2021

Ireland

Ireland – The green island. Wonderful nature, landscapes which are pure pornography, nice people, a lot of whiskey, guinness and irish red ale. Two weeks of travel and irish pubs.

We’ve been travelling with hired campervan around the irish coastline. Starting in Dublin we drove up to Northern Ireland. Visiting Belfast, the Giants Causeway and Derry we discovered the beauty of the north.

Our overnight parking spots where just perfect. I think there is nothing that’s more beautiful than beeing awakend by the sound of the waves aproaching the coastline.

From the north into the wild west of Ireland, back into the republic. Driving along the Wild Atlantic Way with its national parks full of untamed nature. The Wild Nephin Reserve/Ballycroy National Park is definitely the most lonely spot i’ve ever visited – and for me also the most beautiful place in Ireland. Pure Nature, no people, loneliness, and the sound of wild nature.

We continued our journey driving through Connemara to Galway, one of the most charming cities in Ireland. The lively historic center of Galway just invites you to stay longer than you’d expect.

And Galway is also the gate to the most famous cliffs in Ireland – The Cliffs of Moher. Up to 200 meters tall and just breathtaking.

Now it’s just a stone’s throw to Limerick and Kerry. The coastline of the South West is a meandering mix of inlets, coves and peninsulas, so there is plenty of opportunity for cliff-top walks and rambles. You’ll find one of the best hiking spots in Kerry in the Killarney National Park. Here you will find one of the oldest remaining oak forests in Ireland.

Killarney was our penultimate stop before going back to Dublin. We then continued our trip to Cork and of course to Middleton, visiting the Jameson whiskey distillery.

We finished our trip where we started it – in Dublin – for me the most attractive city of Ireland. Wonderful people, a lot of street musicians, artwork everywhere and the best bars and pubs you can imagine.

Latvia 2019

Latvia

I went to Rīga the capital of Latvia for a few days in December 2019. First time for me visiting the baltics and it was splended. The culture, the architecture, the people – just fantastic.

December in Rīga means going on to lovely christmas markets, snowy weather and sun never beeing very high. Take a train to the beach of Jūrmala and walk trough the snow. Get you some “Karstvīns” (mulled wine) and enjoy the view over the snow white beach. Listen to the rough Baltic Sea with it’s waves and breathe deeply.

The architecture of Rīga is a mixture of old classical buildings in style of Art Nouveau and large buildings of Constructivist Architecture from the soviet era. The historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mostly famous is the building oft the “Brotherhood of Blackheads”.

As explained earlier a trip to Jūrmala is a wonderful day excursion. You can get there by train easily an cheap. It’s a half hour train ride from Rīga main station and there are trains departing between every twenty to thirty minutes.

You’d like to know something about the history of the latvian craftsmanship od settlement history? – so visit the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia on the outskirts of Rīga near Jugla Lake. You can get there by bus from the city center in half an hour. It’s one of the largest Open-Air museums in Europe.

The latvian food is very substantial. If you’re a friend of meat it’s perfect for you. The latvian cuisine offers you a variety of classics. But if you’d like to have some fish or venison you’ll find something as well. Also Sauerkraut and russian food is very popular. I always went to the christmas markets to get some sausages with sauerkraut, accompanied by some “Karstvīns” (mulled wine) or a traditional latvian beer.

And if you’re in Rīga once, don’t miss the central market. It is located near the central station an offers you the freshest food you would find in town. One of the oldest markets in Europe and it is still not a touristic site. The market is mostly visited by locals doing their grocery shopping.

I love Rīga, it’s one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe. If you’re going to a trip to Latvia – enjoy it!!!

Greece 2020

Santoríni

Have a look on the work of my latest travel to Santoríni, Greece in November 2020. The island was pretty empty the last week before lockdown, but good weather conditions and warm temperatures have made the journey quite perfect. Santoríni is a paradise for all kind of hiking tourism. You could have a short walk through the villages or maybe a large one along the caldera for several hours. Or just walk on the beach.

If you’re interests are more cultural and historical a visit at the Archaeological Museum of Thera or the Museum of Prehistoric Thira would be an option. You are also able to combine hiking and culture by visiting the archaeological site of Anchient Thera. Starting in Kamari or Perissa and go for a two-hour-hike from one village to the other with Anchient Thera in between them on the Messavouno mountain, 360 meters above sea level.

Santoríni beaches are marvelous as well. The famous red beach for example or the beaches of Perissa and Kamari with their black volcano sand. And the water temperature is still quite warm in November. You don’t like swimming? – so just walk along the beach, get in just with your feet, cool down and relax.

The best way getting around the island is by using the local bus. It’s not always easy to understand the timetable, even more often the displayed time is not correct, but it basically works very well – and it is cheaper than a rental car or taxi.

Also very important – the greek food!!! When you’re in Greece you need to try the variety of the greek kitchen. Moussaka, Tomatokeftedes, Souvlaki especially in Santoríni you’d have to eat fish or seafood or rather hava some sweets like Loukoumades. Greek kitchen is well for both, vegetarian and meat lover.

And last but not least – the Santoríni wine

Having a glass of local wine while watching the sunset with a view into the caldera is one of the best things you could do in Santoríni. The local wines are great but not cheap as well. However I’d never had one that wasn’t worth it’s money.
